How about a res that is at least 1024 high? All the dual monitors I run are each running 1280 x 1024. If I had a res that was at least 1024 high with proportionate width, I could let the image stretch width-wise if I had to :)

Landmass on the planets.. do you take a surface and spherize it over the planet..??

nope. you make a "texture" [or, if you want to cheat, just find a high res texture on the net, and modify it :P] and then spherize it twice. then work with lighting and what not. the best person to check out for space art would be alyn. he is the master so it seems. i havent been doing this very long... so i've got a bit of practicing to do - if you saw my first planetary picture - you would laugh yourself to tears [which is why it isnt posted ;)].
